How to say NO in three easy steps

By Lee Humphrey

Step One:  Hold up your hand in the Internationally know sign for stop.  You know the one.  Hand up, palm out, pressing toward the asker.  Force of pressing forward is determined by the asker's persistence.  Both hands may need to be used, that is if you don't have one or both full of the latest project or projects in most cases.

Step Two:  Form the word NO in your head.  Now, say the word NO.  You may have to repeat this several times for the asker to get the idea. Or perhaps you need to say it in several languages for the asker to get it.  Need a little help?  OK, no, nine, neight, uh uh, no way, not today, are you crazy, what part of the word NO did you not understand.

Step Three:  Shake head from left to right, at least three times.  You may have to do this more than three times but I don't recommend  doing this more than 10 times in a row as you will end up with a headache.

You may have to do all three at the same time.  This takes lots of practice.  I should know, I still have problems getting the point of NO across after 50 years.  Note: If you have children and/or grandchildren this technique is really hard to master.  Somewhere along the way most of them have not learned the meaning of the word NO.  Plus society will try to make us feel bad for using the word, especially to family.  Supermom is not real.  She is a fantasy.  Trying to be supermom only gets you heartburn and premature wrinkles.

I know that I am not alone in this one.  We get ten projects going at once.  Our creative minds just won't slow down enough to let us catch up.    We want to help out with one project or another and then next thing we know we are going 90 to nothing trying to get caught up.  Throw in the curve balls that life junks at us and we get overwhelmed.

I really try not to get in over my head but always seem to do so.  I am currently working on four different charity projects.  Each one is special to me and I really want to do them and will get each of them done.  I just have to practice the three steps.  Not just with my sewing but other things as well.  It is usually those other things that make me nuts.

For those of you that don't know I fight daily with Lupus and Fibromyalgia.  Some days are worse than others.  The last three days have been tough.  I just have to slow down or sometimes come to a complete stop.   Just wanted to give an explanation to why I disappear for days on end at times.

Trying to get a special order diaper bag completed today.  Tomorrow I plan to get at least one of the afore mentioned projects completed.   Taking things one step at a time and setting goals and sticking to them is a whole different subject.

There is a round robin quilt on my design wall that I have been waiting to "speak" to me for a week now.   This is my first round robin so it has been a challenge.  But it has been a good challenge.  Making me have to think a little harder and even try a few new things.  Plus seeing what other people like and how they approach them is pretty neat.

So practice the three step program.  More than likely it won't work very often but at least you will have the skills.
